A 22% layoff changes the market. Check whether your req noticed

Canva is cutting 22% of its staff, 1,271 people, according to TechCrunch. The same note, as reported, merges the product, growth and platform teams and reduces "subspecialisation," so employees may take on more responsibilities.

Two things changed at once

People who held narrow jobs may now be on the market. Teams that used to hire narrow are being rebuilt broad. The req approved in July was written for neither. Approved headcount doesn't recruit itself, and a stale job description doesn't either.

The coverage doesn't say which roles or countries are affected, so this is a prompt to check, not a list of candidates.

What to settle before the next req opens

A reorg in the news changes who is available and what the job is. Decide which of those your team has priced in. The cheap time to find out is before the posting goes live, not after sixty days of silence from applicants who read a specialist title and moved on.

Three checks for this week

  1. Does your req describe a specialist role while your own org is merging teams?
  2. Can your team name five companies that have cut or merged teams this quarter, and say where those people gather?
  3. Who owns rewriting the req, and by what date?
